When he worked for Amgen, he had to market a new treatment for hypophosphatasia a degenerate bone disease that begins manifesting itself before the patients are even born. This disease can cause babies to be born without rib cages and they cannot breathe properly. The company came up with a new treatment for the disease that’s delivered in the form of injections. It must be given three to six times per week.
A seven-year-old boy, who was afraid of needles didn’t want to take his injections. Thiel came up with the idea of a buddy system. Where patients see someone else receive the treatment first and if they are ok after receiving the treatment, I will be ok too. It’s the “If they can do it, I can do it” concept in action.
